Economic Impact Assessments for Tourism and Leisure Developments
The GVA Humberts Leisure Consulting team includes members of the Institute for Economic Development (IED), and has considerable experience in producing detailed economic impact studies that can be used in support of planning applications and major grant funding bids. Some recent examples are shown below.
Proposed Hotel Development, St Albans
Pre-application discussions with the local Council led our client to approach GVA Humberts Leisure hotel consultants to undertake an economic impact study highlighting the benefits arising for local residents from the proposed development of a major new branded hotel & conference complex. Our study assessed direct, indirect and induced job creation and additional expenditure.
British Open Golf Championships
Working on behalf of the R&A, GVA Humberts Leisure was commissioned to undertake an economic impact study into the Open Golf Championships at Sandwich in Kent. We conducted a survey of spectators, staff, media, R&A and key sub-contractors to identify their spending within the local economy.
Coatham Enclosure, Redcar
GVA Humberts Leisure had been working with the Council to develop a new leisure destination at Coatham Enclosure. Our consulting team was asked to prepare an economic impact study of the proposed development, which comprises a new public leisure centre, pub-restaurant, retail and residential development, covering the construction and operational phases of the scheme.
Cumbria Leisure Park, Cumbria
Having previously produced a detailed business plan for a proposed mixed-use holiday development on the West Cumbrian coast, GVA Humberts Leisure produced an economic impact assessment at a local and sub-regional level identifying the benefits to the local economy from the construction and operation of the scheme to assist with a bid for regional grant funding assistance.
Tavistock, Devon
GVA Humberts Leisure's Consulting team was asked to independently examine the demand and need for the development of 50-plus timber-clad static caravan-based holiday lodges. A detailed need and economic impact assessment was undertaken to support the planning application. We have subsequently been asked to act as Expert Witness.
Clovelly, North Devon
GVA Humberts Leisure was commissioned to provide a detailed economic impact study in support of proposals to create an upmarket 'village' of 250 holiday cottages with leisure facilities. Our model identified that the scheme will have a significant beneficial direct and indirect economic impact – in terms of job creation and additional visitor expenditure - at local, sub-regional and regional levels.
