A Chance to Rule the Waves!
A unique opportunity to buy an iconic tourist attraction has been launched by specialist chartered surveyors HLL Humberts Leisure.
Eastbourne Pier, described by Humberts Leisure as “an iconic property” is a renowned Grade II* listed Victorian pier on the south coast in Sussex. The pier’s 1,000-ft length retains traditional features, such as an original working camera obscura and a tea room, while offering a host of more modern attractions, including a nightclub, bars, amusement arcade and shops.
Humberts Leisure has extensive experience of property issues surrounding piers, with the firm’s Richard Baldwin having worked with pier owners in Great Yarmouth, Weston-super-Mare and the Mumbles on a range of projects.
He said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for an entrepreneur to purchase a restored Victorian gem at a time when the holiday market in the UK is seeing substantial growth as people turn to “staycations” following the economic downturn.”
Eastbourne claims the title of ‘Sunniest Place in Britain’ and tourism is its main industry, with more than four million visitors every year.
Its pier was opened in 1870 and stands on cast iron stilts. Visitors pass under an ornate Edwardian entrance canopy to reach the main attractions which include a fully refurbished Victorian tea room; a range of shops and an amusement centre. Centre stage is taken by the domed Pavilion building, constructed as a theatre in 1888 and now home to two bars, the Waterside and Bar Copas, and the Atlantis Nightclub which has capacity for 870 people.
The pier has been owned by Six Piers Ltd since 2006 and is now being offered for sale following a number of unsolicited approaches in the past.
Richard Baldwin said: “Opportunities like this are few and far between and we expect keen interest, particularly given the strong UK holiday market.”
